Symphonie Afrique

Symphonie Afrique is a concept first devised in London by Ivor Placca in 1990 and which has lain on the shelf ever since. It is a work which takes the combination of classical European and classic African music through a journey of discovery and integration. The violins and drums underpin different rhythms moving through the influences of highlife, reggae and latino and hip-hop using classical, modern and traditional African instruments.

The music for 5 parts of the work had been composed and left dormant during this period.
Then one day Ivor met Ndigueul Cheikh Ma Djimbira Ndiaye in Senegal for a recording session with Ngueweul Rythme in the village of Loumpoul. Ivor then invited the master percussionist to his studio in Dakar where they listened to the 5 parts of the work. This was the moment of discovery for the two artists. They had both been in search of each other’s musical ability and input for many years to compliment and realise a dream.
Now with the original parts and additional percussion parts of Ngueweul Rythme, SYMPHONIE AFRIQUE is now revived.
